Spitting on the ledge, I'm still amazed at how red the snow gets when mixed with blood. Did something hit my lip; my focus is truly elsewhere. When seasons change, before the snow starts to fly and the file comes out to prep for the big drip, the yearning is urgent. Now in-season, belaying my partner on a ledge below this lazy tongue of ice and seeing blood-reddened snow, my anxiety is high without a rhythm to distract me.

The thought, I am glad it is not my pitch washes over me. After 30 minutes of teeth chattering I utter, that’s taking so long more than once. Few pursuits wander so freely between trepidation and reverence as climbing on ice. When the nerves settle and the need to get back to the car ebbs, the pendulum of the paradox swings quickly back to the strong need to sink my claws into this pillar of frozen water and climb.
